Outreach

Market Science
As global issues of antibiotic resistance, climate change, and evolution are discussed nightly on the news, bridging gaps between laboratory and community is more important than ever. However, many scientists struggle to find venues where they can meaningfully communicate their research. Market Science is an outreach initiative that provides a venue for interactions between scientists and their communities in a relaxed, public setting. During the summer and fall, Market Science sets up engaging “science discovery booths” at farmers markets, street fairs, county fairs, and other public venues in Minnesota, covering everything from geology to entomology. These booths are staffed by scientists expert in the focal topic, and have provided graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and researchers from University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas, the MN Zoo, and several federal agencies a place to share their science with the public. Our lab has led sessions on invasive species, pollination, ethnobotany, and plant-microbe interactions, and two lab members sit on the Market Science Board of Directors.
